Shir Tikvah recognizes Jewish learning as
intrinsic to Judaism. We consider all aspects of involvement
in the Shir Tikvah community as learning opportunities, including
participation in celebrations, observance of tradition, prayer,
committee service, shabbaton, and formal study. All Shir Tikvah
members are enthusiastic learners. Our learning experience
is multigenerational and appeals to the different kinds of
intelligence our learners bring to the process.
Shir Tikvah values youth education as vital to the community's
growth and future. Youth education focuses on development
of Jewish identity through exposure to Jewish values, participation
in Jewish tradition, and learning Jewish history. The goal
of Shir Tikvah's youth education program, Nashira (literally
"to sing"), is to nurture participation, foster
responsibility, and grow Jewish young adults who view Judaism
as a vital presence in all aspects of their lives. Nashira
is comprised of Sunday morning classes, quarterly Saturday
Shabbatonim and holiday-centered events for kindergarten-age
through high school students. Monthly family- and tot-oriented
Shabbat services introduce Shabbat celebration and ritual
to the youngest members of the Shir Tikvah community on the
first Friday night of the month and the third Saturday morning
of the month.
Shir Tikvah values Jewish learning as a life-long process.
With this in mind, adult education is incorporated into all
aspects of community prayer, celebration, and study. The goal
of Shir Tikvah's adult education program is to initiate and
promote the congregant's life long exploration of Judaism
as the center of their religious lives and spiritual searchings.
Adult-oriented
classes are held throughout the week, and cover topics from
introductory Hebrew to Talmud and Shabbat Torah Study. The
quarterly Shabbatonim are Shir Tikvah community-wide educational
experiences intended to provide multigenerational learning
as well as generation-specific activities.
